During a trip to Northern Europe, he discovered the work of Schongauer, from whom he retained the conciseness of his drawing and the rigor of his composition. He stayed in Italy where he became familiar with the richness and variety of the great Italian masters. He set up an independent workshop in Nuremberg where he practiced copper engraving for the first time, and little by little raised the burin to a point of perfection never equaled.
